Sir John Betjeman
The colours merged down in the dirty gutter
And spread like pools of slowly melted butter.

The group stood firm, with flowing strength unfurled.
Unnamed heroes protecting the free world.

They fight as one against the burning sky,
Bring down the sun that razes waters dry.

In our last stand against the raging weather,
We'll hear the bells toll and go down together.

John Betjeman, English poet, writer and broadcaster, was born today in 1906.

Jack Kirby, American comic book artist, was born on this day in 1917.
